It is important that clients understand the scope of my practice, and know that I deeply respect their individual journeys. As an End of life doula, I do not:
Perform clinical duties or provide medical advice.
I do not insert my personal beliefs into the process and do not make any decisions on my client’s behalf or that of their family.
What is an End of Life Doula?
End-of-life doulas empower, educate and encourage people and their families to be involved in making decisions before, during and after death. They provide a wide variety of services that can include creating death plans, as well as providing spiritual or social support, including helping plan funerals, celebrations, and other commemorative ceremonies. Often, end of life doulas help facilitate important conversations between individuals and their families (or chosen families) to ensure all are clear and aligned on end of life wishes.
What is an Advanced Care Plan?
Advance care planning begins by thinking about your beliefs, values and wishes regarding future health care treatment. It is about having conversations with your close family, friends and health care provider(s) so that they know the health care treatment you would agree to, or refuse, if you become incapable of expressing your own decisions.
When you write down your wishes and instructions for future health care, you are making an Advance Care Plan. An Advance Care Plan is a written summary of a capable adult’s wishes or instructions to guide a substitute decision maker if that person is asked by a physician or other health care provider to make a health care treatment decision on behalf of the adult.
